Sufferings of Jesus & Resurrection
You and your cohort will follow Jesus in the momentous hours leading up to his crucifixion, where he accomplishes the one truly redemptive act in all human history, followed by his defeat of death and the grave, and commissioning of his disciples, inaugurating a new era in the Kingdom of God.
You will have the opportunity to be shaped by Jesus’ self-sacrificial love, forgiving all, thinking always of the good of others, even at incredible personal cost in relationships, health, dignity and, ultimately, life itself.
Your understanding of Greek will expand considerably, as you discuss the many episodes in this lengthy, continuous narrative about the greatest week in all of history!
Pre-requisite
You control an active vocabulary of 3000-4000 words in Koine Greek, through speaking, hearing, reading and writing.
Content
You will read Matthew’s version of what is simply the greatest story of all time – in its original language! An expert teacher will take you through, episode by episode, this piece of literature in the holy Scriptures that tells the most precious account of the love-motivated sufferings and resurrection of Jesus. In short, you will study in detail the story which is the foundation of all civilization and world history. You will not be disappointed!
You will develop great familiarity with Jesus’ anointing in Bethany, the Lord’s Supper, Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, his faithful witness before the Sanhedrin and then Pilate, Peter’s denial of Jesus, Judas’ betrayal, Jesus’ abuse at the hands of Roman soldiers, his enduring mockery at his crucifixion, his body’s burial by Joseph of Arimathea, his gracious appearance to and commissioning of women disciples and, then, the Eleven, who had abandoned him.
By the course’s end, you will be able to:
recite Matthew 26–28 from memory
for each episode, give answers to comprehension questions and pose questions to others
retell each episode in the present tense (with access to the biblical text)
write a summary of each story in your own words
discuss one theme in Matt 26-28 in detail, such as: prophecy and fulfillment, God’s plan versus humans’ schemes, the mercy of Jesus, discipling through role modelling and teaching, parallels between the Messiah and the patriarchs, kings and prophets of old, God’s reversal of death and the grave
describe who Jesus is, in light of his suffering love and resurrection
