ΕΠΙΣΤΟΛΗ ΠΡΟΣ ΦΙΛΗΜΟΝΑ ΚΑΙ ΕΠΙΣΤΟΛΗ ΙΟΥΔΑ

Philemon and Jude

Live course (winter-spring 2024)

Every generation of Christ-followers has its vicissitudes. Questions of justice and correct teaching in the community of faith surround us, today. Thanks to God, who has provided an answer for every question, in the Scriptures. This course, for upper intermediate learners, will look at two short letters in the New Testament, each in its entirety, that are particularly pertinent. Paul urges Philemon to receive Onesimus no longer as a slave but, now, as a brother. Paul’s approach to persuading someone he does not know personally (Philemon) to do the right thing, even at great personal cost, is compelling. So, too, is the vision the Holy Spirit has given Paul for emancipation from slavery. It still resounds throughout the centuries. Judah (traditionally Jude) urges believers everywhere to contend for the holy faith, because false teachers have crept into congregation after congregation introducing harmful doctrines, ruining people’s faith and subverting the effectiveness of Christians as light in the world. Judah boldly addresses sexual immorality in the Church, as well as homosexuality in Sodom and Gomorrah. Judah’s message is pertinent to us today.

ΤΟ ΟΓΔΟΟΝ ΚΕΦΑΛΑΙΟΝ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ ΕΝΑΤΟΝ ΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΘΘΑΙΟΝ

Matthew 8–9

Live course (winter-spring 2024)

This intermediate Greek course focuses on a portion of Matthew that contains a series of brilliant, short miracle stories, interspersed with parables, as Jesus continues to call and refine his cohort of disciples. You will love it. The text (Matthew 8–9), which offers a picture of 10 miracles that Jesus performs following the Sermon on the Mount, provides a compelling picture of our compassionate and mighty Messiah – he loves sinners, heals all who come to him and has power over death. Simultaneously, Jesus enters into numerous conflicts with those who oppose him. In all these ways – calling others to return to God, facilitating the working of God’s power, teaching the Law faithfully and facing extreme opposition – Jesus prepares his disciples to follow his role model. Core vocabulary and structures for narrative abound here. Some more particular language features occur too. The narrative provides ample opportunity for participants to build listening and spoken fluency, while hearing the teacher elucidate key aspects of the text, as well as discussing the stories in pairs and group contexts.

ιουδα επιστολη

Jude

Stand-alone (self-directed) course

The intermediate course goes into considerable depth, looking at the letter of Jude both in terms of content and the rich scriptural matrix that provides its context. Entirely in Hellenistic Greek, the course looks at the concepts of commitment to the teachings handed down to believers, the threat of false teachers (and their future judgement) and the call to contend for the most holy faith. Divided into eight sections, the course looks at a wide variety of topics, from natural metaphors to stories of protection and punishment that Jude draws on from the Scriptures. As in other courses, so, too this one has as its backbone: summaries of individual sections, for easier introduction of the vocabulary and themes; an extensive Greek-to-Greek lexicon; comprehension-based exercises; and an encouragement to bring the letter’s call to right living into our context in the 21st century. (In time, the course will have some further features also, such as prayers or a song.)

This course is still under construction. The reduced tuition (see below) is offered on an as-is basis. The first section, largely complete (contains: γεγραμμένον σύντομον, λεξικόν, ἐξήγησις, ἐρωτήματα), is accessible immediately. The other seven sections will progressively be released.

(It is highly recommended to complete the Philemon course before this one).

Registration for the course gives you 12-months of access.

Projected course duration: 20-40 hours

Tuition: $120 (USD)

For early registrants, on as-is basis:

Limited-time reduced tuition: $50 (USD)
